100% Grenache. The oldest vines were planted in 1912. The quintessential Grenache in its most beautiful expression on his cradle Châteauneuf. Between notes of black fruit and violets, this wine evoluates with very soft tannins already melted. A beautiful bottle, archetype of the appellation, to marry a deer stew today and within the next twenty-five years.
Domaine de la Janasse has quickly become one of the Superstar estates of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. The estate was founded in 1976 by Aimé Sabon and now led by his descendants, Christophe & Isabelle Sabon who still oversees the vineyards and farms organically. They farm around 100 hectares of Côtes du Rhône and Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the latter is all in the northeast commune of Courthézon. Grapes are largely de-stemmed; concrete tanks are used for the Grenache, and oak for the Syrah and Mourvèdre: in other words, everything is fairly traditional.
“I have long been a huge fan of the wines of the Sabon family of Domaine de la Janasse. Just about everything they make, from their Vin de Pays to their Côtes du Rhônes to their flagship Châteauneuf du Pape wines, are remarkable.”
